Kildee Announces $229,000 in Federal Funding for Flint Neighborhoods

Congressman Dan Kildee announced new federal funds to help Metro Community Development, Inc. develop affordable housing, revitalize neighborhoods, and create good-paying jobs in Flint.

This $229,000 federal grant, through the federal NeighborWorks America program, will help Metro Community Development increase access to affordable housing and support first time home buyers in Flint. The grant was funded through the government funding bill Kildee helped pass into law in December 2022.

“Every Michigan family, regardless of their zip code, deserves access to safe, affordable housing. I am proud to announce this federal grant for Metro Community Development that will create jobs and affordable housing opportunities in Flint,” said Congressman Kildee. “In Congress, I will continue to support investments in mid-Michigan neighborhoods that strengthen our community and grow our economy.”

NeighborWorks is a public non-profit organization established by Congress in 1978 to help communities develop and preserve affordable housing, strengthen neighborhoods and create good-paying jobs. NeighborWorks partners with nearly 250 local and regional nonprofits nationwide to advance local solutions to community development and affordable housing challenges.

“We are so grateful for this grant funding approved by NeighborWorks America, and we appreciate Congressman Kildee’s leadership efforts to secure these federal funds for Flint.

This critical funding supports our core mission of fostering small business development, preparing families for homeownership, creating and preserving affordable housing, and advancing efforts throughout Genesee County to reduce homelessness. Last year, Metro helped 433 business clients by providing 923 hours of technical consulting; created 28 new homeowners; assisted 543 families with financial literacy and credit counseling and financed 34 enterprises with more than $2 million in small business loans. In addition, we awarded nearly $600,000 in home improvement grants to 80 low-income residents to help them improve their homes,” said Brian G. Glowiak, CEO of Metro Community Development.

Congressman Kildee has worked to strengthen neighborhoods in communities across mid-Michigan. Earlier this year, Kildee announced $500,000 to help the Flint Housing Commission revitalize the River Park affordable housing complex and surrounding neighborhood.

In 2022, 2021 and 2020 Kildee announced Neighborhood Works grants to promote affordable housing in Flint.
