Parent and Child Together Time: Family Reading and Literacy

In the month of March, the Latinx Technology and Community Center hosted a Parent and Child Together Learning community read event. This event showed to be a wonderful opportunity for families to come together and share in the joy of reading. During the event there was a showing of 15 youth, accompanied by parents that live in Genesee county and surrounding areas. During the duration of the event, the students and teachers came and listened to the Executive Director read a book entitled, Side By Side, a children’s book that introduces the civil rights leaders, Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. The book further expounds upon the struggles the surmounted and the causes they championed as civil rights leaders within the labor unions.

This reading activity was not only informative but inclusive and interactive as well. During the duration of the activity the reader would pause at various places while reading and ask questions concerning the main themes discussed in the preceding pages of the books. This would result in the students enthusiastically saying the answers. This helps to promote comprehension and critical thinking skills. This type of activity not only helped children to develop their reading skills, but also strengthened the bond between parent and child.
