October is National Fire Safety Month.
According to the National Fire Prevention Agency (NFPA), Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage.
This horrific conflagration killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres of land.
It’s imperative that we avoid future incidents of this magnitude by becoming proactive rather than reactive.
As a volunteer for the American Red Cross, I am doing all things necessary to create a fire savvy community.
This includes erecting a Fire Safety Initiative that collaborates with The City of Flint and faith based organizations to show Flint residents how to create an effective fire safety plan, how to properly use a fire extinguisher by using a simulator, demonstrate hands only CPR, and provide residents with free smoke & carbon monoxide detectors.
As a responsible citizen, it is paramount that we “do our part” and assist our firefighter heroes that risk their lives daily to ensure or safety.
