Explore Historically Black Colleges & Universities: Their Impact and Legacy

If you are the parent of a high school junior or senior, you know that the question of “what comes next” is a pivotal one. For some students, college is the right answer… but the question is, “Where?”

Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) have produced 40% of all Black engineers and 50% of all Black lawyers in America. Seventy percent of Black doctors in our country attended an HBCU, and 80% of Black judges are alumni of these institutions. “Their relevance is unquestionable, and students have a cultural affiliation with these schools that causes them to continue to make the choice to attend an HBCU,” says Hailee Clack, President of The Floyd and Brenda Clack Initiative and current HBCU student.

HBCU are not always included in traditional college fairs. However, thanks to a collaboration between the Library and the Floyd and Brenda Clack Initiative, you are invited to explore what these schools have to offer. The Library is hosting the second annual Flint to HBCU Forum on Thursday, December 21, from 5:00-7:30pm. Come hear about and discuss the rich history and cultural relevance of our nation’s HBCU with current students and alumni. You will also learn about financial aid options, scholarships, and college acceptance tips.  Join us to explore which HBCU might be right for you!

The Library offers many additional resources to help students explore college opportunities, including college admissions test preparation, college exploration, and tutorials for college success skills. One of our Librarians would be happy to show you the resources and help point you toward what you need.
