Former Flint Deputy Fire Chief, Carrie Edwards-Clemons, takes Position with Lansing Fire Department

On January 12, Lansing Fire Chief, Brian Sturdivant announced to personnel that “After an exhaustive nationwide search, we have identified our finalist for the vacant Assistant Fire Chief position. Chief Edwards-Clemons is set to assume her duties on January 29th. Her wealth of experience and leadership skills make her a valuable addition the the LFD team.”

Carrie retired from the Flint Fire Department in 2022 as Deputy Chief. She holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration with Emphasis in Public Administration as is a licensed building inspector, Paramedic, Fire Instructor, and EMS Instructor Coordinator.

Carrie has completed studies with the International Association of Fire Chiefs Fire Service Executive Development Institute and is a credentialed Chief Fire Officer as designated by the Center for Public Safety Excellence.

“I would like to formally thank Chief Sturdivant and the City of Lansing for this opportunity to serve. I am very excited to begin working with the Lansing Fire Department (LFD) and finding ways to contribute my skills to the team and the LFD standard of excellence. I look forward to the new challenges and opportunities this position presents and I will do my very best to exceed expectations.”

Assistant Fire Chief Edwards-Clemons also serves as the President of the International Association of Black Professional Firefighters, Incorporated, and is a member of the Links, Incorporated. She holds several board positions including the YWCA Board of Directors and the HFRCC Board of Directors. She is a member of several professional and community-based organizations dedicated to servings others.

Editor’s note: I have met with Assistant Chief Edwards-Clemons and, while she is moving ‘down the road’ to take this position in Lansing, she also promises that she will not be a stranger in her hometown of Flint. It is, after all, only a short drive on I-69. With that being said, Flint’s loss is Lansing’s gain as they are getting a dedicated and accomplished public servant in Carrie Edwards-Clemons. We wish her all the success and joy she deserves in her new position in her dedication to a life of public service.
