Drop Everything & Read During National Poetry Month!

Hello, Readers. We at the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library hope you enjoyed a wonderful National Reading Month in March.

April is both D.E.A.R. and National Poetry Month. D.E.A.R. stands for “Drop Everything and Read,” a celebration of reading designed to remind folks to make reading a priority activity in their lives. You may remember that author Beverly Cleary wrote about D.E.A.R. in Ramona Quimby,  Age 8. Since then, “Drop Everything and Read” programs have been held on April 12 in honor of Mrs. Cleary’s birthday.

Whether you celebrate National Poetry Month by reading, writing, or listening to poetry, the library has you covered with books in print, ebooks, and audiobooks. My personal favorites are How to Write a Poem by Kwame Alexander and The Collected Poems of Lucille Clifton 1965-2010.

While I am talking about favorites, let me tell you about my favorite day during National Poetry Month; Poem in Your Pocket Day, April 18, 2024. It’s easy to participate in Poem in Your Pocket Day. Here are some ideas of how you might get involved.

  • Select a poem and share it on social media using the hashtag #PocketPoem
  • Record a video of yourself reading a poem, then share it on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, or another social media platform you use.
  • Email a poem to your friends, family, neighbors, or local government leaders.
  • Schedule a video chat and read a poem to your loved ones.
  • Add a poem to your email footer.
  • Read a poem out loud from your porch, window, backyard, or outdoor space.
