“At least two people are killed every day in the United States by drivers running red lights…and that number is only going up,” according to a new study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. How many stop sign and red runners do YOU see every day?
Recently, in downtown Flint, an SUV traveling at a high rate of speed on Saginaw Street, ran a red signal and slammed into the side of an MTA bus, causing it to crash into the Patterson Building.
Fortunately, no one in the bus was injured, but the driver of the SUV was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
In Flint, neighbors are not only complaining about high speeds on residential streets, but they also tell us that stop sign and red lights are being ignored as well.
The Traffic Taming Taskforce is planning to audit neighborhoods and present data to our city and police officials, specifically targeting areas where stop signs and lights are being violated.
Now, some good news! With the announcement of a new position in the city called, Traffic Safety Maintainer, the taskforce is looking forward to working with this person to eliminate these problems.
The duties of the Traffic Safety Maintainer include: installations and maintenance of permanent and temporary traffic control signs, conducting field studies to determine traffic information; and perform related work as required.
Working together, we are looking forward to seeing changes in our existing traffic patterns that will ensure the safely of all in our city!
Thank you to all the people that are making this happen. Both inside our city government, police forces and Taming Traffic Task Force.
The Taming Traffic Taskforce meets the first Monday of each month, via zoom, at 4 p.m.
If you would like to join us, send us an email at traffictamingflint@gmail.com, and we will send our meeting information to you.
